Tile is typically composed of a mixture of water, clay and sand unless it is a natural stone. A tile will most often come as a relatively thin, decoratively shaped tile or in the shape of a square or rectangle. The dimensions of the tile will depend on what sizes are offered in a particular tile collection.
Being the most popular tile on the block, ceramic tile if often less expensive than porcelain and natural stone tiles. It is made of natural materials and clay that's less dense than the clay used for porcelain tiles, meaning it is not as durable as porcelain and natural stone tiles. Ceramic tile is fired at lower temperatures than a porcelain tile and can be slightly more susceptible to osmosis. Although the majority of ceramic tiles are glazed topically not allowing any room for moisture to be absorbed, the edges are sealed in with the grout and the back side should not come into contact with water as the tile will be embedded in thinset and or mortar. Ceramic tile can be found all throughout a home, it is ideal for entry ways, kitchens, bathrooms, utility rooms, backsplashes and can even be used as countertops.
Porcelain tile is popular because of its durability but often comes with a higher price tag. It is made of from fine clay and other natural materials and is then fired at a higher temperature than a ceramic tile. The fine clay allows for a denser/heavier product and is more impervious to water than a ceramic tile is. Porcelain tiles have what is called a through-body composition, meaning that the color of the tile is continuous through and through unlike a ceramic tile. A porcelain tile is typically found in high-traffic areas as it is more durable, but it is also found in bathrooms, kitchens, utility rooms, countertops, backsplashes and even outside.
Glass tile can be manufactured in different ways allowing for a total of 3 different styles. The first is "cast glass" this type of glass is formed as a liquid and is known to have a textured finish such as waves or bubbles with the color and design of the tile being through and through. Next is "fused glass" that is made just how it sounds by sheets of glass being fused together though a multi-step process that allows different glazes or designs to be added during the process. Fused glass can come with a smooth and or textured surface. Last but not least is "coated glass" it is also made from layered sheets of glass, although the color and or design is placed on the backside of the tile so that you are given the viewpoint of looking through glass. Glass tiles are easy to clean and offer a light reflecting look that no other tile will offer. Although they are unbelievably beautiful accents to a home, it is important to ensure that the proper grout is used and that no abrasive cleaners are used on it as it can scratch when not properly maintained.
Natural Stone tiles are often seen in stones such as granite, limestone, marble, slate, travertine and sometimes even sandstone. These types of tiles have different finishes that all require them to be sealed for proper protection and care. One of the most popular finishes on a natural stone tile is "polished," this will give you a smooth, glossy and luxurious look. Although it could be a safety hazard to some because it is slippery when wet and is more prone to showing scratches or other markings if installed on the floor. Another finish is called "honed," this look is more matte and somewhat muted in color but still has a smooth finish. This particular finish is better for high traffic areas because they don't scratch as easily and are less slippery. It is important to ensure this finish of natural stone tile is sealed properly and on a regular basis because the pores on this stone are left open so it could stain more easily if not sealed correctly or as needed. The next finish is called "tumbled," you will find that the coloring of tumbled stones is more muted than a polished or honed stone. The edged on tumbled stones has more natural or worn look adding more texture and depth to the look of your natural stone tiles. This finish is more ideal for higher trafficked areas and shower floors as it does not have a smooth and slippery surface like the other finishes. Be sure to look over the various types of finishes offered for the natural stone you are looking at and see if it is functional for the space you're planning to put it in. Also note that these tiles will require more upkeep than a traditional ceramic or porcelain tile.
Mosaic tiles are the most fun and unique surface covering option when it comes to tile! They are often used on backsplashes, shower floors, niches, feature walls, fireplaces, entry ways and more. Mosaic tiles oven come on a dot-mount or mesh-mount, so they are easily installed and "moldable" to the space you're planning to install them in. These tiles most often have a combination of tiles, colors, sizes/shapes and or material that gives you that unique look. They are typically more expensive per square foot than your large format tiles.
